A hospital orderly is transporting a patient up a ramp. The ramp is 5.0 m long, has a vertical height of 3.0 m and a horizontal dimension of 4.0 m. If the patient has a mass of 60 kg, and the mass of the wheelchair is 15 kg, how much work (in J) does the orderly do on the patient and wheelchair in moving them to the top of the ramp?

Total weight being pushed = 60+15 =75 kg
You can do this two ways. 1. find the component of gravity force along the incline and use the ramp length.

2nd way is as follows:
Orderly lifted 75 kg by 3 m.
Work done= gravity force x distance
Gravity force = 75 x 9.8 =735 N
Work done in lifting vertically = 735×3 =2205 N-m
Work done to push 75 kg tothe end of the ramp horizontally
=0 since there is no friction.

Total work done by orderly =2205+0 =2205 N-m =2205J
